Whale sanctuary of Chilean coast a possibility

last update: Apr 11, 2008 02:43 PM

In June, Chile is hosting this year's annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission. It is very likely that President Bachelet will endorse the proposal to declare Chile's coastline a whale sactuary.

The plan is not a new one, there is already a law in place which outlaws whaling in Chilean waters through 2025.  Now, the plan is to extend that law indefinitely.

The plan is widely receiving the backing from the government with even the Navy supporting it. The environmental groups are also supporting the proposed sanctuary.

Sen. Letelier said “This is about creating a country where there is respect, deep respect. Respect for our heritage, for our waters, and for life itself. And that’s what should be unilaterally declared, that our country offers a sanctuary to the whales.”

It is the next step into what environmentalists hope, is the creation of a protected zone covering all of Latin America’s Pacific coastal waters.
