Seal hunters drown in accident

last update: Apr 01, 2008 10:22 AM

Three seal hunters were killed and one hunter is still missing. The accident happened last Saturday when their boad capsized in the ice-covered Gulf of St. Lawrence.

Two men were rescued from the "Acadien", a 12 meter trawler. At the time, the boat was being towed back to port by the coast guard after encountering steering problems.

The annual seal hunt started on Friday, and more than 275,000 harp seals are targetted by the Canadian hunters, this is 5,000 more than the previous year.

A lot of hunters did not sail out yesterday after the tragedy. The weather is bad, with several boats being caught in ice up to 70 centimeters thick on the gulf which hinders the hunt.

The bad weather is not the only thing the hunters have to face.  They are also facing protestors, who oppose the cruel hunt.
