Sabotage prevents whaling quota

last update: Mar 17, 2008 11:15 AM

With the whaling season drawing to a close, Japanese whalers are trying to make the most of it by catching as many whales as possible. They have barely achieved half their quota.

Due to the protest actions of conservation organisations such as The Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace, they have not reached their quota of almost 1000 whales.

Now the weather is changing and the waters are beginning to freeze, soon the whalers will have to return home.

The newspaper "The Age" spoke of a quota of 451 killed whales, most were believed to be pregnant females.

Japan's Fisheries Agency said that their operation was unsuccessful due to what they called "acts of sabotage" by an anti-whaling group.
