Russia removed radioactive lighthouses

by Kris Molle last modified 2008-11-12 11:32

Russia has removed another 46 strontium-fuelled lighthouses from the coast of the White Sea and the Barents and Kara Seas during the summer.

The total of removed radioactive lighthouses is now 180.  They were all active between  Murmansk and the Novaya Zemlya.  They were all replaced with solar cell installations.

Another 11 lighthouses will be removed next summer.  It is all part of a plan that started in 2001.  Of the 180 lighthouses that have been removed already, 153 were decommissioned.

Norway has part financed the project with 180 million NOK already and Finnmark County Governor’s office has allocated 75 million NOK of fresh funding for the job.
