Nordic clash over whaling

last update: Apr 10, 2008 02:01 PM

The Nordic, Swedish and Baltic government leaders have been meeting in Northern Sweden for top-level discussions. Sweden openly criticized Iceland and Norway for refusing to sign the global ban on whaling.

It was a tense meeting and irritation sparked between Nordic leaders speaking to Swedish Television News about Norway’s and Iceland’s announced intention to continue whaling in the next few weeks. This attitude of the two countries is in defiance of the international ban, as both say that there are enough whales in the world’s oceans.

The countries stand to loose too much good will.  It is overall believed that a better income is to be made from the whale tourism.
