No commitment to monitoring whalers
The Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett won't commit to monitoring Japanese whalers again this year. Last year, a custom ship "Ocean Viking" conducted surveillance of the Japanese whaler's activities.
Environment Minister Peter Garrett said "The Government has been really clear about its opposition to the killing of whales in the name of science in the Southern Ocean. That opposition remains. Everything that we said that we would do in order to engage on this issue we have done and we'll continue strong diplomatic engagement in the mean time."
He added "Now we're in the second phase in the second year and we will decide what actions the Australian Government needs to take or should take at the appropriate time and that will happen in due course."
