The seal had left the Derwent River estuary and caused quite a stir with workers just coming off their shifts.
Tasmania Police spokesman Constable Stuart Franklin said that the police was there to help the animal find his way back to the water: "Using a combination ushering and shouting, and using their vehicles, they managed to get him back into the water. He (the seal) was a bit upset. He was making lots of funny noises. We get the odd one coming out of the water but its unusual for them to get on the road. They can come out of the estuary but usually not so far from Hobart and not out of such a sheltered bay."
