Japanese whaler's not at full strength

by Kris Molle last modified 2008-11-13 09:29

According to Greenpeace; Japan's whaling industry in crisis after the delisting of its whaling vessel Oriental Bluebird. Allegations of theft of whale meat among the crew led to the vessel being decommissioned.

The de-listing means that the whalers are a vessel short and it will be difficult to find another one in the short time they have left before they sail out again.

This is good news to Reece Turner,  Greenpeace whales campaigner, who said Greenpeace believes Japan's whaling fleet would head for the Southern Ocean as early as this week.

He said "If they are unable to get a new boat, and it looks unlikely in the short period of time, they will only be able to get about half the quota. Already we have potentially halved the number of whales the Japanese fleet are going to be able to kill."
