IWC members urged to join research program

by Kris Molle last modified 2008-11-17 13:59

Peter Garrett, Australia's Conservation Minister announced a $6.15 million whale conservation program and called upon all nations of the IWC to join in this new Southern Ocean whaling partnerships.

The research program might be Australian funded and inviting towards all members of the IWC, but Garrett said that they would particularly welcome the participation of Japan.

Australia would like to reform the International Whaling Commission and this "non-lethal" research partnerships is part of the proposal, aimed at stopping so-called scientific whaling, of which Japan is the main practitioner.

Mr Garrett said; "The Australian-led Southern Ocean Research Partnership is a ground-breaking new model for co-ordinated regional, non-lethal whale research. Modern day research uses genetic and molecular techniques, as well as satellite tags, acoustic methods and aerial surveys, rather than grenade-tipped harpoons."
