EU puts Arctic environment on Agenda
At the beginning of this week, representatives of 30 European countries met to discuss new European Union research initiatives in the Arctic.
The conference was held just few days before the EU presents its new Arctic policy document.
The conference, which will be held in Monaco, will be on "how to beef up EU environmental research in the Arctic" and more than 30 countries will participate. Non-European members of the Arctic Council such as Canada, Russia and the United States – as well as representatives of China, India, Japan and South Korea have been invited as well.
The European Union (EU) has called on countries to step up coordination in scientific research in the Arctic in efforts to confront global warming which, according to French Ecology Minister Jean-Louis Borloo "...is not being coordinated. It is unthinkable that there is scientific data out there that is not being shared," he said. "We are going to commit the necessary means to have this worldwide information network."
