Canada agrees to address charges

by Kris Molle last modified 2008-11-17 13:42

Environment Minister Jim Prentice agreed to host a gathering of officials from the Canadian government, the northern territory of Nunavut and conservationists as soon as possible to address the environmentalists charge.

Environmentalist Organiation World Wildlife Fund, has asked the Canadian Government to take immediate steps to halt the decline of the Baffin Bay sub-population of polar bears.  Canada's environment minister Jim Prentice agreed and will host the gathering.

Nunavut is setting the quota and WWF wants Nunavut to stop issuing hunting permits for the area until Canada and Greenland agree to a new bilateral deal on quotas and the population recovers. According to WWF, the number of Polar Bears have fallen 30% in 15 years.  There are just 1500 animals left.

Governmental reports stated that the animal is in no immediate danger.
