Arctic territorial hotzones

National territory claims in the Arctic have been a growing priority over the past months and years, and particularly in the news since the the Russians planted a flag on the ocean floor at the North Pole. With natural resource concerns and the prospect of oil and gas deposits in the Arctic becoming more and more attractive to those wishing to exploit them, national sovereignty also becomes more and more important.

This speaks directly to the need for the Polar Conservation Organisation and a common policy by the EU to represent all of Europe's interests in the polar regions.

The polar regions are alot more than simply indicators of global warming and tour parks to see exotic animals, there are national and economic as well as cultural and human aspects of value too.
