Activist's conflict in Gulf of St Lawrence

last update: Apr 05, 2008 12:30 PM

After a successful anti-whaling campaign in the Antarctic waters, the militant Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has declared war on the Canadian seal hunters.

The Sea Shepherd's vessel "Farley Mowat" came in contact twice with a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker, with contradicting versions of who hit who. Luckily, no one was hurt.

Alex Cornelissen, captain of the "Farley Mowat", said "They are ramming ships in dangerous ice conditions. It's like the Coast Guard has declared war on seal defenders."

The version of the Coast Guard is a different one.

Canada's Fisheries and Oceans Minister, Loyola Hearn claims that the protest crew provoked a confrontation. "The "Farley Mowat" manoeuvred itself in front of the Coast Guard vessel to cause a collision between the two."
