2001 - Evacuation from McMurdo

by admin last modified 2006-01-01 00:27

On 23 April 2001 11 people were evacuated from the US Antarctic Base McMurdo. A New Zealand C130 left New Zealand and returned safely from McMurdo with 11 people. Among the 11 people 7 had medical reasons (1 serious case with heart trouble) for leaving, while another 4 were evacuated for non medical reasons.
At the time, this evatuation was the basis for a media hype as well as several alternative theories to emerge regarding the cause and reasons for the evacuation. These theories ranged from Alien virus' to Nuclear and other weapons testing. Reports also claimed that a few were lifted for disciplinary reasons.
