2000 - Doctor Evacuated from the South Pole

In October 1999 Dr. Jerri Nielsen was evacuated from the South Pole. She had discovered a Breast lump several months earlier and tests had shown signs of cancer. Her rescue generated a enormous amount of media attention, which assisted greatly when she released a book about her experiences. Dr. Nielsen seems to have recovered completely from her cancer.
