At first, before the second world war, this museum was only focused on the arctic explorations, then when Russian Antarctic explorations began they decided to join both continents in one museum to give the Arctic and Antarctic museum. Although it is rich in valuable and unique exhibits from both continents, the majority of them come from the Arctic, due to russia's proximity.

One of the most interesting display of the museum is the Polar Philatelic Collection. Some of the best examples of the Polar philately are displayed in the museum.

Their four major displays are:

  • Arctic environment
  • The discovery and history of exploration of the northern sea route
  • Economy and culture of the northern regions
  • Antarctica

The museum has had quite a big impact in Russia and internationally, with over 6 million visitors in 60 years and around 300 exhibitions.
