The Netherlands Polar Symposium 2009
last update: Jan 27, 2009 12:03 PM
In September 1875, the famous Arctic explorer and naval officer Karl Weyprecht addressed a meeting of scientists and physicians. He reported the basic principles of Arctic research and suggested that fixed Arctic observation stations should be established. He pleaded for international cooperation in scientific polar exploration and paved the way for the organisation of the first International Polar Year (IPY).
