in partnership with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and with support from the Canadian International Centre for the Arctic Region (CICAR). A conference for 50-60 policy makers, politicians, academic and NGO experts and business people to be held at Wilton Park which will examine the following issues: The effects of global warming are reflected with greatest intensity in the polar regions. The Arctic, once politically and literally frozen, is melting at a pace much faster than envisaged. What are the implications for energy and other resource supplies, the environment and fishing, transport and shipping? How can key countries and stakeholders, including the scientific community, work together to address these? What are the appropriate governance institutions and mechanisms that will be needed?

Aims and Outcomes of the Conference:
The High North is entering a new phase with an expected sharp increase in the level of human activity. As a result there is a growing need for international cooperation, enhanced knowledge, interaction and a common approach to key issues. The Arctic and the adjacent areas are characterized by low tension and common challenges. Thus potential for cooperation is strong. The conference aims to bring together key players to analyse the issues and explore ways of developing co-operative policies.
It seeks the following outcomes:
- To strengthen links between governments, institutions and other stakeholders working on the issues outlined above.
- To further contacts between private and public sector stakeholders
- To reach agreed action points
- To produce a report on the discussions and conclusions

The cost of participation will be £1350, including three nights’ accommodation and full board, as well as collective transport from and to Gatwick Airport. Special rates may be available for academic bodies, NGO and others not in a position to pay the full amount.
