On 29 May 1969 four men (Sir Wally Herbert, Dr Fitzroy ‘Fritz’ Koerner, Allan Gill and Dr Ken Hedges) and some forty dogs finally reached land after 16 months of travelling over the top of the world, successfully completing an expedition that would be hailed as the ‘last great journey on Earth’ – the first crossing of the Arctic Ocean along its longest axis, and the first undisputed expedition to reach the North Pole on foot.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the culmination of this remarkable expedition, Discovery Point will be hosting a talk by Kari Herbert, the daughter of the leader of the British Trans-Arctic Expedition, polar explorer Sir Wally Herbert.

Kari Herbert first reached the polar regions at the age of ten months when her father took her and his wife Marie to live on an island off the coast of Northwest Greenland for two years. Now a respected writer, broadcaster and photographer, Kari's first book, 'The Explorer's Daughter', received exceptional reviews in the national press. Her talk will include reminiscences about her father and his love of the polar regions as well as stories from her own childhood and more recent trips to her childhood home. The talk will be illustrated with stunning photography from the Herbert Collection.

Kari will be joined for questions and answers by her mother Lady Marie Herbert. Kari's talk about her father, Sir Wally Herbert, and her own experiences living with the Polar Inuit, will be introduced by Dr Huw Lewis-Jones, Curator of Art at the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge.
