The IPY Joint Committee has endorsed this event as the first in a series of international interdisciplinary IPY conferences. It is therefore cosponsored by the International Council for Science (ICSU) and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). Sessions will take place in the Pribaltiskaya Hotel and at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI).

Early-Career Polar Researchers: Become Part of the International Polar Year (IPY) Legacy Advanced students and PhD graduates conducting research in the Arctic or Antarctic region during the IPY and who complete their degree between 1 January 2002 and 31 March 2009 are eligible to apply. Applicants must be conducting polar research during the IPY, but they do not need to be part of an IPY-approved project. Scholars from the full range of natural and social sciences are eligible. While the focus is on the US system with preference given for American citizens and US residents, a few slots will be reserved for citizens of any country who are residing outside the US and demonstrate interests in working with US researchers.

The NCCR Climate, Switzerland's Centre of Excellence in Climate and Climate Impact Research, invites young scientists to join leading climate researchers for keynote lectures, workshops and poster sessions on the occasion of the seventh NCCR Climate Summer School 2008. The summer school is open to young researchers (PhD students and Post-Docs) worldwide. Participation is highly competitive and will be limited to a maximum of 70. The registration fee (1400 CHF) includes full board accommodation, excursion and teaching material. A small number of grants will be available for students from developing countries.

The Antarctic Treaty Summit is endorsed by the International Polar Year with initial public-private funding from the US-UK Fulbright Commission, Tinker Foundation, Marine Mammal Commission and American Geophysical Union.

Climate change in the Arctic is occurring more rapidly than in any other region in the world. Recent years have seen sea ice retreat at a pace significantly exceeding scientific expectations. Increased access to newly opened waters is also opening the way for new economic opportunities and bringing new challenges. There is a clear need for regional and international co-operation to develop an effective governance framework for the marine Arctic. The conference builds on a 15-month transatlantic dialogue involving more than 50 Arctic experts. The experts collaborated to develop policy options for protecting fragile ecosystems, safeguarding the rights and interests of indigenous peoples and promote the sustainable use of resources in marine areas.
