Co-hosted by the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee (CARC), Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) and the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies (CMSS), this 2 1/2 day conference will bring together over 350 Aboriginal leaders, scientists, academics, policy makers, NGOs, industry and government to generate the foundations of a comprehensive northern strategy for Canada.

The goal of our Polar expedition with code name “Arctic Calling” is to sail from the Pacific (Alaska) to the Atlantic (Baffin Island) via the mythical Northwest Passage. However, few people know about ESB activities and their tremendous potential for environmental monitoring. ESB sessions at SETAC (The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry) and other scientific communities can establish a network of players in the banking arena and promote the ESB idea to science and environmental protection.

In celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the completion of the first and only crossing of the Arctic Ocean on foot, and the first undisputed expedition to reach the North Pole, the Scott Polar Research Institute and Polar World are delighted to present a touring exhibition of prints of Sir Wally Herberts stuining paintings of the Arctic and Antarctic. The Art of Exploration is an important exhibition which gives its audience an evocative insight into the experience of the polar wilderness. Sir Wally Herbert passed away recently and this is an opportunity to celebrate his contribution to our knowledge of the polar world.

On 29 May 1969 four men (Sir Wally Herbert, Dr Fitzroy ‘Fritz’ Koerner, Allan Gill and Dr Ken Hedges) and some forty dogs finally reached land after 16 months of travelling over the top of the world, successfully completing an expedition that would be hailed as the ‘last great journey on Earth’ – the first crossing of the Arctic Ocean along its longest axis, and the first undisputed expedition to reach the North Pole on foot.
