Te Papa's key tasks are to preserve and present the taonga (treasures) of New Zealand's peoples and to interpret the country's heritage for national and international audiences. Highlight: From December 2008: Te Papa has the world’s only complete Colossal Squid specimen on display. The museum also holds one of the world's largest whale collections. The Tug 'Lyttelton' Preservation Society is a non-profit organisation whose aims and objects are to restore and maintain the vintage steam Tug 'Lyttelton' in working order, to promote public interest in the vessel and make it possible for passengers to travel on it by means of public cruises and chartered voyages around the Banks Peninsula area. The Tug escorted Ernest Shackletons ship ‘Nimrod’ out of Lyttelton on their Antarctic expedition.
