The main objectives of the Provincial Museum of Lapland are to collect, preserve, and study the Lappish cultural and natural historic material. The collections of the Provincial Museum of Lapland mainly consist of objects related to life in Rovaniemi and Northern Ostrobothnia, and the Sami and gypsy cultures. The museum’s picture collection consist of approx. 300 000 photographs from Rovaniemi and Northern Ostrobothnia. The museum displays its collections in various ways, and aims to promote education, exchange of information, and research in the field. The cultural ecological exhibitions of Siida illustrate the adaptation of natural life and the Sami people to the extremities of life in the North. Combining their knowledge and expertise, the Sami museum and the Northern Lapland Nature Centre have created a rich information package around the northern seasonal cycle. The introductory exhibition explores the development of the natural world and culture in the region from the post-Ice Age time to the present day. The main exhibition introduces the special characteristics of the northern life following the rhythm of the seasons.

The Skolt Sámi Heritage House introduces the life of the Skolt Sámi people, who were transferred to Finland from the Pechenga area in northwestern Russia after the war. The exhibition introduces their traditional trades, diversified culture and craft skills, orthodox faith, and migration to new areas. In the present day, the Skolt Sámi Heritage House operates as a Skolt museum with a collection of approx. 300 items used by the Skolt Sami people.

The exhibition introduces the nomadic Sami culture and the special character of the natural world in the North. The reindeer has the leading role in the exhibition, as it represents the relationship between the local people and the wildlife. In the land of fells and rivers, animals and people alike move according to their sources of livelihood and traditions.
