Biography

Edgar Evans was baptised in April 1876 in the St Mary the Virgin church (on the Gower Peninsula of Wales), and married in the same church on 13 December 1904. He was a Chief Petty Officer (C.P.O.), and was a member of Scott's "Discovery" expedition. Together with Lashly and Scott, he sledged 700 miles across Victoria Land. Evans wanted more adventure, and therefore volunteered for Scott's "Terra Nova" expedition. He was chosen for the Polar Party, and was the first of five explorers to die on the return from the Pole.

On 4 February 1912 he fell on the Beardmore Glacier and died on 17 February at the Lower Glacier Depot.
