Antarctic Impact Studies
last update: Aug 20, 2008 01:27 PM
From 1997 environmental impact studies have been contuducted by the
several people including Dr Tony Hansen of the Laurence Berkley
National Laboratory with funding and support from the National Science
Foundation.
Dr Hansen's reports (in PDF format) are an invaluable tool for the management of the US
Antarctic program. In particular the studies have measured the polution
generated by the Amundsen-Scott and McMurdo stations in relation to virgin areas of Antarctica and other research startions.
Although
very detailed the data concerning the impact of electricity generation,
aircraft fumes and other polutants is clearly accumulating in some of
these high population and activity sites. Particularly the
contamination near McMurdo the main port, airfied and logistics station.
