The ship proved to be uneconomical for commercial use and was subsequently acquired by the Norwegian Hydrographic Service and overhauled to make it into a proper research vessel. In 1994, the ship was acquired by the Norwegian Polar Institute. The ship has thus been used for a broad range of research expeditions in both Polar regions.
