History
The Lance was originally built as a fishing and sealing ship to be used in icy waters. The ship proved to be uneconomical for commercial use and was subsequently acquired by the Norwegian Hydrographic Service and overhauled to make it into a proper research vessel. In 1994, the ship was acquired by the Norwegian Polar Institute. The ship has thus been used for a broad range of research expeditions in both Polar regions.
