On 25 December 1902, British Captain William Colbeck discovered the island, naming it Markham Island after Sir Clements Markham, President of the Royal Geographical Society and the architect of the "Discovery". However, the name was later changed in memory of Robert Falcon Scott. Scott Island, the remains of a volcanic crater, is rarely visited. It is quite small as well: 370 m long, 180 m wide and only 50 m high. During the winter, the whole island is covered by snow and ice, but during the summer, large areas of rock are exposed.
