History: Building works were completed on 26th February 1977. It is in use year round.
Location: Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetland Islands - (62°14'16"S, 58°28'15"W)
Notes:
It is managed by the Department of Antarctic Biology, Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Akademia Nauk, PAN).
The Station is often visited by tourists and it even has its own tourist information centre.
Science programmes carried out:
Marine biology, oceanography, geology, geomorphology, glaciology, meteorology, climatology, seismology, magnetism and ecology
Area and buildings:
There are three main buildings and several smaller constructions; accommodation facilities, Lighthouse, Tourist information centre, laboratories, summer cottages etc.
Interesting Trivia:
The Station was named for Henryk Arctowski (1871-1958), an meteorologist who accompanied the Belgian explorer Baron Adrien de Gerlache on the "Belgica" expedition in 1897-1899.
Near the Station, there are breeding colonies of three different types of penguins (Adelies, Chinstraps, and Gentoos).
The area is designated as a site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) as provided by the Antarctic Treaty.
