Alternative Theories

All about the various theories of alien life, hidden stations, secret research in Antarctica.
Introduction
Besides the many official reports and theories that are used to explain Antarctic science, history and exploration, there are also several unofficial or alternative theories.
Due to the fact that science and human knowledge is so limited, particularly as far as Antarctica is concerned there are many, many unexplained research results or phenominon. Science itself is an ongoing process of searching for and understanding the facts. Likewise, it is human nature to propose explanations and investigate theories for that which is unexplained or disbelieved.
Most notably Lake Vostok plays a role in many of these reports and theories, but it is by no means the only place about which there are theories and reports. Some more sophisticated and detailed reports combine information from several sources and places in Antarctica to support a or several theories.
Alien Life in Antarctica
There is much official scientific speculation about possible life forms in Antarctica that could exist on other planets or their moons. Finding a new species in Antarctica that can exist deep below the ice surface would widen the possible location of life on other planets tremendously. In addition several official scientific reports (refuted) of meteor research (some found in Antarctica) claim that microscopic evidence exists of possible life in space.
Questions like could these life forms have entered earth's atmosphere millions of years ago inside a meteor, and if so could these alien species be the ancient ancestors of all life on earth. Other ideas include that there could well be lost cities or buried space craft under the ice, hence for example the unexplained magnetic anomaly associated with Lake Vostok.
Scientific reports and evidence thus far has not supported any of these claims, but the possibility that there could be new life forms in Antarctic is of great interest to NASA as similar life forms could exist below the ice on other planets.
Lake Vostok
Lake Vostok is either the center or a main component inside many alternative and unofficial theories surrounding Antarctica. The liquid lakes, the magnetic anomaly, the possibility of new types and species of life, and the fact that official scientific reports leave so many interesting questions unanswered makes it a prime target for speculation.
Theories range from the forgotten city of Atlantis, to alien ships having landed and living under the ice (X-Files style).
